Tintype Session

Tintype Session

$175.00

A tintype is a durable, direct-positive portrait with a rich, distinctive quality. The tintype process, also known as ferrotype, is an early photographic technique from the mid-19th century. It involves coating a thin iron plate with a sticky collodion mixture containing light-sensitive salts, then immersing it in a silver nitrate bath to make it light-sensitive. While still wet, the plate is placed in a camera to take the photograph, with exposure times ranging from seconds to minutes. After exposure, the plate is developed with ferrous sulfate, fixed with potassium cyanide or sodium thiosulfate, rinsed, dried, and varnished for protection.
